The AirshowStuff Blog Has Moved

We are excited to announce that AirshowStuff has a new look! Today we are launching a new site layout and blog. From this point forward this blog system will be left up only as an archive of previous posts. No new posts will be added, and we will soon start winding down some of the interactive features. Some of the recent posts have been relocated to the new system, and thanks to an automatic redirect when you click on one on them you will be instantly transported to the corresponding post on the new site. We will leave the old video pages and magazine site up as archives as well, accessible through the navigation bar to the left.

The new site design reflects the evolving nature of AirshowStuff, and integrates the blog and other areas of the site much more closely. We hope this will enable us to not only post content more efficiently, but also keep it looking great as technology and viewing methods change.

Any of you who have subscribed to this blog will have to resubscribe to the new blog, where we will send weekly recaps of posts. We apologize for the inconvenience but hope you will choose to follow us. It should be quite an improvement.

Please join us at the new AirshowStuff!

Gordon Bowman Jones Passes

It is with great sadness that we report Gordon Bowman Jones passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 15th after complications from an injury sustained in late January. Since 1971, Gordon has been “The Voice of Aviation” at airshows across the world. From Australia to Las Vegas to the sandy beaches of Atlantic City, NJ, Gordon’s witty humor and knowledge of aviation always kept airshow fans happy wherever he was. His Facebook fan page is full of pictures and videos from his adventures across the globe.

Gordon’s family plans on having a celebration of his life on April 25th, his birthday. Fans and friends of Gordon can post on the “Gordon Bowman Jones Support Page” to leave their thoughts to the family.

2015 EAA Skiplane Fly-In – Oshkosh, WI

EAA Skiplane Fly-In 2015

Winter in the northern Midwest means not much flying, and certainly no airshows. Except, that is, for one special event put on by the Experimental Aircraft Association in their hometown of Oshkosh, WI. In the middle of the harsh winter, a few dozen planes gather at EAA’s private Pioneer Airport for one afternoon of flying and fun.

This year 26 skiplanes (plus one tundra-tired Cub) made it in to the event, and were greeted by hundreds of spectators milling about the small field. The coolest part of the event is how close you can get to the airplanes, even when they are taking off or landing. Piles of snow provide a chance to get some unique elevated photos and can even place you at eye level with the aircraft taking off. The event ran for about three hours, and included a chili cookout in one of the museum hangars. The weather was an improvement over 2014’s event also, with temperatures near 30 degrees and no wind. It was a very fun afternoon, and a fantastic break from the lull of winter in Wisconsin!

Check out our photos from the event below and see more in our photo gallery – 2015 EAA Skiplane Fly-In (Oshkosh, WI)

Wings Over Waukesha Cancels 2015 Show, Hopes to Return

Wings Over Waukesha Airshow

The Wings Over Waukesha airshow in Waukesha, WI has canceled plans for a 2015 show, but hopes to return in 2016. In a post on the airshow’s Facebook page, the organization said that the cancellation is due to both runway construction work and lacking financial support. The show has always been a small but intimate affair, primarily featuring well known aerobatic acts and local warbirds. It is the closest on-airport show to Milwaukee, which hosts its own show on the shore of Lake Michigan each year. We are sad to see it go for this year, but hope it comes back strong in 2016!
